About Us

matthewcathyaxel_theshack

Hi, we’re Catherine and Matthew, and along with our energetic three-year-old, Axel, we’re the family behind The Shack.

We took over The Shack in September 2025, excited (and a little nervous) to carry forward a neighborhood spot that so many families already loved while thoughtfully shaping it into a space that continues to grow with our community.

Before The Shack, I ran an ice cream shop for five years, a chapter that came to an unexpected close during the pandemic. Stepping away was difficult, but it also gave me clarity around what I wanted to build next: not just an ice cream shop, but a place rooted in connection, creativity, and family.

Alongside ice cream, I’ve been teaching art and calligraphy workshops since 2018. Art has been a grounding force for me, especially through motherhood, and a vital part of my mental health. For years, I longed for a space that felt truly mom- and kid-friendly, somewhere parents could slow down, create, and show up as they are, with kids in tow.

That vision is what continues to shape The Shack today.

We’re constantly working to improve the space by introducing art activities, creative classes, and workshops for both kids and adults. In addition to hosting my own classes, we’re excited to welcome local artists to lead workshops and share their talents with our community.

Today, The Shack is more than an ice cream shop. It’s a place to celebrate birthdays, take an art class, sip a coffee or affogato, and enjoy a small pause in the middle of busy days. Whether you’re a parent looking for a creative outlet, someone curious about trying something new, or simply here for a scoop, we hope The Shack feels warm, welcoming, and a little like home.

And if you happen to see me behind the counter from time to time, please stop by and say hi, I’d love to meet you.

We’re so glad you’re here. 🍦✨
